Dr. Carmel J. Barrau
(Chief Financial Officer of the LLF)
A Life Dedicated to Service
Dr. Carmel J. Barrau completed his medical studies in Haiti before immigrating to Miami, Florida, where he specialized in internal medicine. Board-certified in his field, he made history as the first Haitian American appointed by the Governor of Florida to serve on the Florida State Board of Medicine.
Those who have crossed paths with Dr. Barrau describe him as a man of deep compassion, integrity, and generosity. He firmly believes that our purpose on this earth is to help one another; and he lives that belief every day, often going far beyond what is expected to uplift others.
Recognizing the barriers faced by minority students seeking admission to medical school, Dr. Barrau established the Carmel J. Barrau Scholarship Program at Florida International University, empowering and encouraging minority students to pursue careers in medicine. When the Lucia Lamour Foundation envisioned building the auditorium for the sisters of Immaculate Conception in Trou Du Nord, he was among the very first to offer his support. Later, when approached to assist Saint Dominique Savio School, his response reflected his unwavering sense of fairness and compassion: “We helped the girls; we should help the boys too.”
Acts of kindness carried out selflessly are rare. Individuals like Dr. Carmel Barrau are even rarer.
As Chief Financial Officer of the Lucia Lamour Foundation, Dr. Barrau remains deeply involved in fundraising efforts, working tirelessly to ensure the foundation’s mission continues to transform lives. His leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment stand as a powerful example of service rooted in love, justice, and hope.
